Why advertise with us?

Recruiting, retaining and promoting women is great business sense. We know diversity in thinking and decision making increases productivity, profitability and innovation, yet it is estimated only 25% of women make up Scotland’s STEM industries. Around 70% of women with a STEM qualification leave their sector,  not only is this a waste of talent and opportunity but it jeopardises Scotland’s chances to be at the forefront of innovation. We need a thriving STEM sector in Scotland to be globally competitive and relevant. To do this we need the sector to be diverse.

The Equate Careerhub is the only website in Scotland tailored specifically towards attracting women  in science, technology, engineering and the built environment.

Aiming to address the gender imbalance through  recruitment practices the Careerhub will work with employers to make their job adverts more inclusive by:

  • Detecting gendered language.
  • Reviewing the format, structure and tone of the job description.
  • Reviewing images.
  • Providing suggestions to widen the recruitment search and maximise the number of women applying for the position.

Equate Scotland has access to the largest network of women in Scotland’s STEM sector reaching 1000’s of women working and studying in STEM.

What you will get

For £200 + VAT  (£240.00) per job advert you will get:

  • Up to 30 days of advertising including your company logo and profile.
  • A language review of your job description including suggestions to eliminate any gendered language or unconscious bias.
  • Direct advertising to 1000’s of women through our newsletter and social media accounts.
  • A link to your website so applicants can apply direct.
  • An opportunity to provide feedback on your experience.

As an organisation engaging with Equate Scotland and demonstrating that your organisation is actively creating an inclusive and diverse working environment, you will be considered an employer of choice for women in STEM.

Upskilling, reskilling and training opportunities

We want to see more women work, progress and lead in Scotland’s STEM industries. COVID 19 has presented many challenges but has also presented the opportunity to Build Back Better by keeping equality on the agenda as the economy recovers.

To support economic recovery due to COVID 19, Equate are advertising any upskilling, reskilling or funded training opportunities on the Equate CareerHub for free. (This excludes any long term paid training or employment opportunities such as Apprenticeships).

Get in touch if you or your organisation is offering any upskilling,  reskilling or training opportunities in STEM here.

Creating inclusive workplaces

The recruitment process is only the beginning of someone’s journey with your organisation, what individuals encounter once they become an employee is just as important. It is crucial that employers consider the workplace environment and how it can be inclusive to all. What does the induction process involve? Are people of backgrounds treated fairly by their colleagues and managers? Is there a supportive culture? Are equality and diversity policies being actioned?

Retention of good staff is a key indicator of an employer of choice and we know that repeated vacancies and staff losses create financial and expertise losses to organisations.

In order to deliver inclusive recruitment, your organisation needs to be proactive about create an inclusive workplace at every level. To support you to do this, Equate Scotland provides a range of training and consultancy, to help make you a leader in equality and diversity in STEM. Find out more here.

FAQs

Why do we charge for this?
Firstly, to ensure we attract companies serious about what they are advertising and who are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workforce. Secondly, to cover the running costs of the CareerHub and support other services we provide women free of charge. Learn about the women who have benefited from Equate’s work here.

Is there a discounted rate for SME’s and small businesses?
There is no discounted rate for SME’s and small businesses. We have priced the CareerHub to make it accessible to organisations of all sizes.

Why do you review the job description?
Some language can have a specific bias towards a sex or social gender and it is important to consider this when writing job descriptions. Through the words that we use, job descriptions can reinforce unhelpful stereotypes or inadvertently exclude certain groups. But by considering the wording, structure and tone of the job advert, employers can start to attract a more diverse pool of applicants.

The review process we provide assesses biases in language that can be interpreted negatively by potential applicants of all under-represented groups as we do not see women as a homogenous group; they are from different backgrounds, races, sexualities and disabilities. Our work is to help you eliminate bias to attract the widest diversity of talented individuals. Our language reviews are targeted primarily at women in STEM, however feedback from employers tells us that as a consequence of these reviews their employment practices become more accessible to all.

Do I have to accept the changes made to the job advert?
Employers are not obliged to accept the changes made by Equate Scotland; however, we strongly recommend considering them to encourage applications from women applicants.
