What careers are there for STEM students in Pensions and Finance?
Exploring early careers opportunities at Hymans Robertson.
When it comes to thinking about careers in pensions and finance, it can be difficult to imagine where those who come from a STEM background can fit – however it may surprise you to know that applicants with skills in tech, digital and data are in high demand to employers within these industries.
Hymans Robertson is one of those employers. We offer independent pensions, investments, benefits, and risk consulting services, as well as data and technology solutions. We invest in the latest technologies to build ground-breaking solutions for our clients, giving them the tools to improve their own financial futures. Our teams are passionate about working at the cutting-edge of technology and building software that has a positive impact for our people and society.
So where do STEM students and graduates come into this?
Though we are an actuarial firm, we aren’t just a firm of actuaries. The activities mentioned require an ever-increasing number of technical skillsets to bring these solutions to life – whether you are joining us as a developer, cyber security expert, risk modelling consultant or even starting your career with us as a Graduate Trainee Consultant or Summer Student Intern. We believe that whatever your degree programme you’ll be able to bring a valuable set of transferable skills that can be easily applied to our opportunities. This is particularly apparent for those coming from a STEM background!
Our Graduate Trainee scheme is just about to open for applications and can offer some exciting opportunities to students who can bring an interest and enthusiasm for working with numbers, building relationships with people, and solving complex problems – often traits you’ll find from those from within the STEM field. In this programme you’ll join us under one of our specialist business areas (Actuarial, Investment, Defined Contribution, or Insurance & Financial Services) where you will develop your analytical and numerical skills, along with your technical understanding of our modelling tools and your stakeholder engagement skills to become a fully qualified consultant.
For those in their penultimate year of study we run a fully paid eight-week summer internship programme that will allow you to build your experience, grow your professional network and develop your confidence. And for those who do particularly well during their internship, we are able to offer you a ring-fenced position on our Graduate Programme for when you have finished your studies.
Why pick Hymans Robertson?
We’re not alone in the move to add talented STEM students and graduates to our team – but we do believe we stand out from the crowd in terms of the culture and support we offer our staff. We want to make working at Hymans Robertson the best job you’ll ever have – that might sound ambitious but that’s our goal!
Diversity and Inclusion is a key focus for us, and though we have set ourselves some challenging targets within these areas, we’re proud to say making progress against each – including reducing our gender pay gap. You can read more about our work in our recent D&I publication.
