Client Service at Baillie Gifford – building relationships
As a Client Service Manager, you’ll build strong relationships with our clients to get an in-depth understanding of their requirements, aiming to become a trusted long-term partner and adviser. At Baillie Gifford, we put the interests of over 700 clients ahead of our own. Clients as varied as pension schemes, charities, public funds and financial institutions. Established as an investment management partnership over 100 years ago, today we are a leading independent global business with over £200 billion under management and more than 1,200 employees.
The programme – a gateway to a new career
Our two-year programme includes a comprehensive induction to the firm and the investment management industry, as well as full support to study for professional qualifications, such as the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and the CFA Level 1 or CISI Level 6 Fund Management module. Throughout the two years you’ll receive on-going training and support, such as mock client meetings and practice pitches, as well as the opportunity to move between teams. From day one you’ll have a real role and responsibility, as you help us achieve our business goals while you continue to develop your new career.
What we’re looking for
Financial services experience isn’t required, as we’re looking for people from a wide range of backgrounds. However, there are some key attributes that will help you flourish as a Client Service Manager. These include the ability to build rapport easily with clients and colleagues alike, an inquisitive nature and a flexible attitude that’s open to new ideas and solutions.
We offer a very competitive fixed starting salary, as well as an excellent benefits packages that includes a generous pension, life assurance, discounted private healthcare, annual bonus and 34 days’ holiday. Baillie Gifford also has an equal parental leave policy, that entitles all employees to 52 weeks’ leave regardless of gender or length of service. Staff receive full pay for the first 26 weeks and half pay for a further 13 weeks.
Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, all Baillie Gifford employees are currently working from home and we anticipate that the interviews for the Client Service Programme will be conducted online. As these restrictions lift, we anticipate offering our staff a blend of home and office working. Baillie Gifford is also open to alternative working patterns of a four day week or 8am – 4pm working hours.
What you can expect
Returning to the workplace can be challenging for any mother, but after eight years as a stay-at-home mum, Alicia Cowley decided the time was right. Now working as a Client Service Manager at leading investment firm Baillie Gifford based in Edinburgh, she tells us more about her journey back to the professional world.
Before having children, Alicia had worked in financial services in London and Singapore. As she looked around for opportunities, she was attracted by Baillie Gifford’s programme to retrain as a Client Service Manager:

Alicia was also impressed with the range of support available to her as a working parent. As well as training courses to help with the transition, she was assigned a line manager from a similar background, who helped her adjust back to the professional environ-ment.
“Going back to work was challenging both professionally and emotionally. My role is to provide Baillie Gifford’s clients with the best possible service, and the clients must come first. However, the firm is always supportive if one of my children is sick or I need to at-tend a school concert. It’s an ongoing journey as my family’s needs change and my career evolves.”
Now in her third year, Alicia is a vital part of the Asia team, with particular responsibility for clients in Singapore and Thailand. She describes Baillie Gifford as an exciting and dynamic place to work:
