Opportunities at Leonardo

We’re looking for engineering skills to join Leonardo’s 1,000-strong Edinburgh team. We’re a close-knit, multi-talented bunch who are at the cutting edge of engineering for aerospace and defence. We’re crying out for people like you.

We have exciting opportunities to apply your science, technology, engineering and maths skills and academic background to solve real-life engineering problems on state-of-the-art projects.

You’ll work on things like the radar for a Typhoon fighter jet, develop surveillance systems that are used by coast guards to save lives at sea, and could be the brains behind a top secret international project we can’t mention here. Hush hush.

So, who is Leonardo? While it might sound like we love sketching the Vitruvian man, we actually spend most of our time drafting, coding, building, and problem-solving engineering projects for defence. Like that other famous Leonardo – no, not DiCaprio – we’re passionate about the principles of invention and design. That’s how we’ve become a high-tech, lead player in building innovative systems for the defence and security sector, with a team of over 45,600 employees worldwide.

Does this seem exciting to you? Glad to hear it. Here’s a few of the great things you can expect when you join the Leonardo Edinburgh team.

Great work-life balance.

Life shouldn’t be all work and no play. That’s why we offer brilliant benefits like half days on Fridays’, flexible hours, gym memberships, and many other incentives to make life sweet.

You’ll love Edinburgh.

There’s a reason the Scottish capital is regularly voted one of the world’s best places to live. It’s beautiful. Cultural. Historical. And – for those who like to rock lycra on the road – it’s extremely cyclable too. For the joggers among us, there’s also no end of stunning vistas for a 5k after the 9-5. Good luck matching that at some business park miles away from actual Cambridge.

The work’s never boring.

Obviously not. You’ll be part of a team designing and building some of the most high-tech defence systems on earth. From day one, you’ll have a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities. Such is the pace of progress, there’s no risk of glazing over. What’s more, you’ll see each project through the full product cycle – from inception to implementation. So you can truly own what you do.

Room to grow.

We offer fantastic opportunities for learning, development and professional growth. And because defence engineering most definitely never stands still, this isn’t really an advert for one job:

Your career will be massively varied. Join us, and you’ll be constantly reinventing and developing your technical skillset from one project to the next. Learning on the job isn’t just a benefit – it’s a must.

A career for life.

Such a variety of new projects is maybe the reason we have such an incredibly low staff turnover. Many of our people stay for careers that span decades. We see these people, our silver-haired heroes, as living proof that we’re a great place to work. This experienced team is also a human encyclopaedia of technical know-how. What better way to learn and develop than by surrounding yourself by the very best, and most experienced, in your field?

A place of invention.

Edinburgh really does punch above its weight when it comes to innovation. It always has. This is the birthplace of modern medicine, the telephone, cloning, train travel, you name it. Leonardo is the biggest player in today’s attractive cluster of tech innovation in the Scottish capital. Edinburgh might look historical, but it’s cutting edge.

Innovation is our thing.

While other companies are ‘innovating’ by plonking a ping pong table in reception, we’re actually… innovating. We push the boundaries of technology, accuracy, and safety in defence engineering every day, on a global scale. From guidance systems with hair’s-breadth accuracy, to technologies so innovative they’re downright top secret – we’ve invented it.

There’s no ‘I’ in team.

It might sound cheesier than cheddar, but together everyone achieves more. We live for that at Leonardo. On every project, we can only engineer. The impossible if we put our best minds together to solve problems with innovative solutions. We’ll stop with the sports clichés. But we’re serious when we say: we can do it.

We should’ve put a Sudoku here.

Because we already know you love to solve problems. It’s what makes Engineering fun. And that’s what we live for. When you’re blazing trails by building complex defence systems, you can rest assured that the second you’ve solved one problem, another’s on the way – which, for you, we’re sure isn’t a problem.

Make a difference.

Innovation in defence systems can be the difference between life and death for those serving the armed forces. Not only that, but our Engineering projects are a vital part of making better, accurate rescue equipment – including our life-saving surveillance radar systems that are invaluable for coast guard rescues worldwide.

Through the diversity of our people and in the diversity of our thinking, action and intent, we are a global, forward thinking, innovative company whose approach is that we are the right fit for every one of our people. Everyone is welcome, and we are committed to ensuring you feel included – regardless of who you are and what makes you you!

Be part of a proud history.

There might have been a few name changes over the years, but our Edinburgh operation has been leading the way in defence systems at its current site since 1943. By joining us, you will be part of the spiritual continuation of a lineage that spans from the engineering that saw Britain fly to WWII victory, to the cutting-edge mod systems of today. To be part of this continuing legacy is a source of pride for the entire Edinburgh team.

Job security.

In the UK, Leonardo is the largest inward investor in the defence sector, the largest Italian inward investor in the country overall, and one of the biggest suppliers of defence equipment to the mod. We won’t shy away from saying that we’re hugely successful at what we do. Not only does that help defend national security, it gives you job security too.
