For a better world of energy

If you have STEM skills and want to restart your career after a break, our STEM returners programme could be for you.

Male and female SSE engineers in the field

SSE Renewables and SSE Transmission have teamed up with STEM Returners to develop a programme designed to support those who’ve taken a career break or are looking to return to the sector.

Who we are

We’re SSE and we have ambitious plans for the future. We need talented and skilled people to join us on our mission to provide the energy needed today while building a better world of energy for tomorrow.

We understand people sometimes need time out from their careers. Whether it’s to care for somebody, raise a family, recover from health issues or even try a new line of work – we recognise that a career break can often allow individuals to gain a wealth of new experience. We developed our STEM returner programme to reach the talent we know is out there and can offer encouragement, flexibility, mentoring and training.

Why SSE?

Flexible working, share schemes, enhanced maternity/paternity packages, a day of paid volunteering and a generous holiday allowance to name just a few. We like to think life at SSE is pretty good. Our culture encourages everyone to be themselves – no matter what their background is. And no matter what, safety is at the heart of everything we do, and we live by the mantra ‘if it’s not safe, we don’t do it’.

What is it?

It’s a paid 12-week programme which is aimed specifically at those wishing to go back to engineering mid-career after a break of any length. The programme will be based in various SSE locations across Scotland.

What will you gain?

All returners who take part will have the opportunity to gain a full-time position with SSE making this a genuine opportunity to restart careers locally.

What skills are we looking for?

Asset Management

SSE Transmission will consider previous STEM experience in Commercial/Procurement but other disciplines will be considered if there is demonstrable knowledge of commercial analysis/management from relevant sectors such as water, renewables, oil and gas, etc.

Project Engineers/ Engineering Managers

SSE Renewables have a preference for candidates with previous engineering management experience in a transferable sector such as energy, oil and gas, thermal, etc.  Any relevant STEM discipline will be considered although electrical, geotechnical and civil are preferred.

How do I apply?

All applications have to be made via our partner STEM Returners before the closing date of Sunday 27th September.
